Hello, I am looking for a BMW 316 E36 (1991 - 2000) and I am wondering if the car has a cam belt (timing belt) and if it does have one, how long does the cam belt last (what milage to change it) and also if someone can kindly tell me the service interval on BMW 316 E36. Many Thanks

Bmw is bad for using belts.Mercedes use too use nothing but chains. No more than 80,000 miles I would put on a belt.I won't buy any belt drive car.

The e36 316i with the m43 engine uses a timing chain as do most beemers made after 1992.

I reckon that should come with a chain as most models after 1991/92 do. I own a 318is and that comes with chain not belt.

50k miles if i were you. If u just got it and dont know when last it was done better safe than sorry, get it replaced asap.

That car has a timing chain, not a belt. The only thing you have to worry about is chain stretch. The existing chain can be checked very easily to see if it is still within specs.

Most BMW's have cam belts. To be on the safe side I'd replace at 50k-60k. Don't risk any longer.

It has a chain. That guy with the Mercedes answer is goofy.
