This is an enormous question! Try "The Book: On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are" by Alan Watts.

Identity is something we assume. We do it so early in life it seems to come naturally (and in a sense it does) but when we think back on it, it really is a surprising act. Even the particular accent we each speak with is not something inherited from our parents, and at least once in our life (normally about puberty) we can comprehensively adjust it to suit our human surroundings.

Religion can be understood as just this: the question of what you choose to identify with.

Very good question! We so much used to identifying ourselves with different social groups, certain behaviour, views on life and believes which are really just part of somebodies expectations or traditions, that are not really us. It is almost scary when answering this question we can only say: my name (it's like "my number"). Is that all? How do you identify Van Gog or Picasso? I think we are all identified by the happiness we bring to our families and by the sadness (or a smile) in your mums eyes when she is thinking of you, by the joy that you bring to your kids, and by the pain when hurting somebody. That is right - we all can be identified (and then remembered) by the emotions and feelings and memories of people around us about us. That is who we are, I think.
I identify Van Gog with light warm yellow and pale blue, with hope. And it doesn't matter I never new the person, these are emotions that associated with his name,
I identify my boss...Well... Not with a smile...

Huge, interesting question. I would say it's the opinion we have of ourselves. Conduct an experiment. Next time you're with a group of friends, ask them to write down (anonymously) what THEY think defines YOU. You'll get some interesting and revealing answers!

hi there,

What makes you unique is the way you carry yourself overall, You can joke, cry or anything, but it is really in the way you deal with mature matters...Stress is a big facture now, and what would do with it is also very much noticed by others...I think it is was you finally accept yourself the way that U r, and love yourself in that process..

I think that what motivates you, how you conduct yourself and the choices that you make define the person that you are--that is, your identity.

My birth is enough to make me unique. There is no need to seek any identity except for bureaucratic reasons.
