Japan had occupied Korea after WWII, after the Japanese surrendered the allies split Korea in half to be administered by the allies. The Russians had the north, the Americans had the south...

Similar thing happened in Germany, East and West Germany.

Not sure exactly what happened to Korea. However, it was invaded by the Japanese in WW2. Perhaps it got divided north/south by some agreement between the USA and China - remember that China was on the side of the Allies and is a leading member of the UN.

Sometime c1950s the Chinese wanted to take over the whole of Korea. The US and UK and NATO said no. We had the Korean war. This outcome of this was settled, leaving Korea divided North and South.

South Korea is a thriving country, while in the North Korean sector, the people are enslaved and starved to death in their hundreds of thousands if not millions.

After WW2 we decided to give the soviet the north half, and we got the south half.
We created a democracy from ours, and they created a communist military regime out of theirs.
There was a war between the koreas starting in 1950 and it ended in 1953 with the border being drawn on the 38th parallel, where it is today.
There was no peace treaty, they are technically still at war. Over 33,000 americans were killed

In world war 2, USSR declared war on Japan almost at the end of the war. USSR invaded north part of Korea (which was under Japanese control) and USA invaded south part (also under japs control). After the war USA and USSR became opposed to each others because of their politicals ideology. In 1953, North tried to invade South to reunitate. The war ended as a draw and so the country was still divided. The situation didnt change since then.
