It probably depends on how far the evelator is falling from.. a few stories, it's possible to survive. Anything greater than that, I'd be highly doubtful that jumping at the right moment could save you if you're falling from a great height.

I think your only chances of surviving would be to lie as flat on the elevator floor as possible, and quickly put anything soft under your head.
But your way might work...ha ha
either way somethings going to break!

Lol... i have thought the same thing myself, but i doubt it very much for a start you would have to jump at exactly the right time, and that would be impossible to do, and the sheer power of when it hits the bottom, it would still do some damage to you.

yes, people die on account of impact and gravity, BUT this DID happen to me...i sustained a fracture to my ankle.... i was trapped in one a few years ago and it free fell from 16 stories!!! it was scary and I heard myself saying..."Oh Sh**" !!!! It was over of course extremely quickly but the building ws to blame, i didn't sue, but was out of work for a while in beverly hills!!! i cannot imagine other people's stories abou tthis, and i consider myself extremely fortunate that it was only a fracture and quite a bit of bruising.

Very good question. This stunt was tested in an episode of mythbusters once but it didn't work.
