I recently saw a potted plant that was dried up, with hollow membranous bulbs like dropping hearts, and there was a small orange-red fruit? inside (looked like a pepper honestly).

I am REALLY curious what this plant is... as I found that its dried state was really beautiful... please help... I'll look up anything suggested to see if it is what I am referring to... otherwise, I don't have a clue!

Physalis or cape gooseberries, they have a tart mildly scented flavour, the berry is enclosed in papery beige husk, hangs like a chinese lantern.,cultivated by early south african settlers in the Cape of Good Hope, hence the name cape gooseberries, though the fruit was known to the greeks as early as the third century AD.

There are common and easy to find. K-Mart is carrying the seeds for Chinese lanterns as part of their Martha Stewert seed collection this spring. If you can't find them there, go to davegarden.com, type in the name and it will give you a variety of sites selling seeds/plants.

There are several things it might be, but from your description, I believe you are talking about physalis also called chinese lanterns. It's kin to a husk tomato and dries very nicely.

It sounds as if you are describing a plant called 'Bleeding Heart'.
The plant is a perennial.
