Well, for one thing, there was wide scale destruction to fix up. Another, Germany was very disadvantaged by the conditions of the treaty of Versailles which meant WW2 was almost inevitable. Horrible weapons were used by both sides during the war which meant that the way in which wars were fought changed. These are just a few that I can think of, you should read about it at wiki.

Economic devastation and a bloody mess to clean up. The end of the war and the treaties actually put them back almost where they started, but poorer and with less poyalty able to continue. The German Monarchy (Kaiser william) lost its power almost as soon as the war ended and most of the other dukes and noble like in Austria and Hungary vanished as well.
