MMer8 is correct about the toss being a choice of ends or to kick off. Normally if it is a windy day, the winner of the toss will choose to play with the wind. His thinking is that it will be easier to play with rather than against the wind for a half and hope it dies down for the second half. The other team would then kick off and thus the winner of the toss would start the second half.
