Because some feel that I lot of bands are only there because they are manufactured by a record company to make money.
You also find that there is a culture associated with some kinds of music (particularly emo and metal and the like) and you get to know other people through that music, thus all your friends are into that sort of music, so you don't really hear other types because your friends don't listen to it.
It's also a case of taste.

Becasue sadly people dont listen to the music on a track. They either want to be associated with the 'scene' that said track comes from, or they only listen to the words or melody individually, hence not gaining a full appreciation of the track and therefore writing it off and dismissing it on the grounds that it is 'rubbish' or from 'that crap type of music'.
Its a very narrow minded way of looking at and listening to music.

Many people listen to their type of genre so often that they just start to block out the other types of music. For example, i used to only listen to rock, all kinds of it. I started to listen to country about a month ago, and i'm just now starting to like it a lot. I just had to get used to the fact that the type of music was different. Some people, however, are afraid of missing their favorite songs and new releases in their genre while searching for a new genre. That's just my opinion though. Write me if i helped at all.

When you are younger, I think people go along with a certain enre of music as some sort of "fitting in" thing, even if it is fitting in with the weird kids.
Its a safety and a good feeling when you goto gigs and see othe kids like you, lik at punk gigs all the kids with mohawks feel a kinship and maybe swap tips on how to get it super-straight etc.
It serves its purpose but as you get older you realise other types of music are also valid. Certain bands reach across all types as bein geneally accepted as cool ( i know punks and indie kids and goths who all know it's cool the like the cure)
It's a tribal sort of thing, being loyal to your chosen scene.
Some grow out of it (possibly the real music fans?) and others don't (the posers with the brand new converse, haha)

Coz they're pretentious and think it makes them cool, if they don't like a particular piece / type of music. At the end of the day it's all down to personal taste - you like what you like. F*** what anyone else thinks

Taste, Lack of knowledge, and cultural acceptance. I like all kinds of music. I was brought up around R&B, rap and hip-hop, so natually, i like them the best. I didnt really understand why people would listen to anything else. But as time pas i learned of other genres, therefore extendind my love to classical, jazz techno, rock, pop and yes even country. But where i grew up, Black people didnt listen to country. If you were black and liked country, they questioned you "blackness". Now i just dont give a F(_)CK

People don't actually listen to other music. Kids who listen to whatever is on MTV to be cool don't listen to the music. They might listen to the lyrics or the vocals, but not the actual music (guitar, bass, drums). They listen to it because they think its cool.

some people could blame the way they have been brought up, but it all comes down to being completely unreasonable and narrowminded. i personally like all different genres of music and i am encouraging my 3 year old daughter to do so also.

Because music is something that touches you and you feel strongly about I guess. I'm as guilty of that as the next person!
