You can be 44648 pounds and still be a dancer. You don't have to be super skinny and have nice legs...but if you dance a lot, you will get nice legs, especially if you do tap. And if you do jazz or hip-hop style dances, you'll definatly lose weight.

Well, this all depends on what type of dance you are talking about.
Ballet - Sorry, but yes, to everything. Ballet is about the image of grace and fluidity, delicate yet strong. Ballerina's have to be strong, with good legs, not great legs, but strong muscles, good bones, good lines. The have to train their whole body; arms, tummy, neck, all muscles, to be able to withstand the strain, wear and tear that is put on them. While I have seen larger women doing ballet, and very well, there were several obvious issues I noted. A) When surrounded by all the smaller dancers, they stood out and appeared less graceful than others; B) When partnered with a male, the larger dancer made it hard to display an idea of delicacy and it made lifts harder; C) You have to realize that in ballet, professional ballet, pointe shoes have a weight limit. This is a well known fact that the lighter you are in your pointe shoes, the less stress you put on them and the longer they last. They are sturdy for only so long and so much. Again, this is professional level. Anyone can take ballet class, and should. It is very good for increasing strength, confidence and over all health.
Tap - This has less of a weight issue than ballet, but does require one to think about the fact that you will be moving around a lot more and a lot faster. Tap dance requires strong legs, again, more than nice looking legs, and a good sense of rhythm. Tap is more energetic and less about gracefulness.
Hip Hop - This is more fun and more accomodating to all types of people. I actually, personally, believe that someone who has a typical "Ballet body" does not look as good doing Hip-Hop dance as a regular, rounded person. Hip-Hop is more about rhythm and movement than about being willowy and graceful. You don't need to be as strong for this style of dance, although you will gain strength the more you continue with it.
As for all the many and varied types of dance that you can learn, my opinion is to just try them. One thing to remember about dance is that it is about confidence. You have to be confident in who you are and how you look, otherwise you're just someone who can move your legs and hips wuthout looking silly. If you've never tried dance before, don't get discouraged because you're not as strong or a flexible or as quick; if you have, keep doing it no matter what. You should never let something small keep you from enjoying those things.
As for the stretch-marks: That really depends on the person. Some dancers do have stretch-marks from dance, some from just regular living, and some have none. Some dancers have vericose veins because of dance, some because of genetics, and some don't have it or anything like it, at all. Some dancers have "dancers feet", which is generally thought of as scarred and a bit disfigured feet due to the types of dance shoes worn (especially pointe shoes). So it's not really a dance questions, but rather just a life thing that either does or does not happen. Don't let things keep you from going after what you like. If you want to dance, then dance. Always remember that you will never know until you try.

You can take dance for fun and fitness at any time, but to become a professional you need to start NOW!!! and it may already be too late. Nearly all professional dancers especially ballet dancers are slim or have a low percentage of body fat because they exercise all the time in their classes. It is expected that the ballerina give the impression of lightness and fluidity. I suppose some dancers have stretch marks, but if they are unsightly, they can be covered up by dance clothes or a costume. If you are dancing for fun, you should not care about what sort of body you have - what matters is that you are out there and moving.

This is a complicated question..it all depends on what type of dancing you want to do. You can be a dancer no matter what size you are. If you want to be a ballet dancer, you typically have to be slender and strong..but if your a little bigger, once you start taking classes regularly, and you eat right then you will be able to lose the weight fairly easily anyways. You can always sign up for any classes and if your active then it wont take long for you to become slender anyways..DOnt let your wait stop you from dancing! If your confident and believe in yourself then you can dance no matter what size you are. Dance is a sport anyone can do. and thats a fact jack :)

i've had so many experiences in dancing and i've learned so much more moves. but some of the people i've worked with, some are actually more fat than i am but they can do the moves if they know they can do it and they really can do it. i guess you don't have to be really thin and have nice legs to be a dancer only if the choreographer really doesn't like the opposite of those things. i confess, at first i thought too, that dancers have stretch marks but i really don't know.

Well it all depends on what kind of dancing you do. In any kind of dance you loose weight but in ballet you can't be very big. Pointe shoes have a weight limit, because the vamp and the shank can't support high weights. This also lessens the use of the pointe shoes because they wear out faster. I'm 13 also and I dance pointe, I'm not the skinniest person in the world but I'm not fat either. I do have stretch marks from dancing but I also know dancers that do not have them. It just depends on the person.

sorry to tell you but if you want to become a professional dancer, yes you have to be thin [not skinny but thin]
you also have to practice a lot and unfortunately you need to have a teacher.
as far as the legs, no..that's no important at all!
i hope you become a good dancer if that's truly what you want, and remember to have passion!! that's all that matters! technique comes later!
see ya!

Not even close. As long as you're confident and you have what it takes, body doesn't matter and it doesn't count. Now, to tell you the truth, some places prefer skinny dancers, but they truly don't count.
