A 'celebrity' now is anyone who sleeps with somebody famous and sells the story (Abi Titmuss) has alcohol or drug addiction problems, is snapped snorting coke (Kerry Katona) and goes in and out of Hotel Rehab. No talent required (Jade Goody)

10 years ago we didn't have the gossip magazines or reality shows so a little more talent was required and the celebs then would have been the likes of Samantha Fox and the page 3 girls, super-models and Princess Diana.

I'm not sucking up here, but this is a good question.

(Let's go 25 years ago, because not that much has changed in the last 10 years.) 25 years ago, you had to have a skill to become a celeb. Or it helped. Now, you have to have done something, anything, that causes the media spotlight to fall on you.

Celeb 25 years ago... Orson Welles, Leonard Bernstein, Gore Vidal, Norman Mailer.

Celeb now... John Mark Karr, Anna Nicole Smith, Britney Spears

10 years ago, someone who got where they were through their own merit, ie talent with regards to presenting/ singing/ dancing. Nowadays, with cable TV channels, the internet, myspace and reality TV shows, people can get in the public eye for other reasons , not necessarily good orlinked with talent. They are just famous, and gossip magazins such as Heat etc label them as celebrities so they have something to write about.

celebrity now - is a mundane affair, filled with talentless and pointless people and a vast proportion of them are only celebrity through 'bad' reality TV shows, their behaviour, courting the media, family backround, tell all tabloid stories etc etc (think Paris Hilton, Jade Goody and all the other shallow maggots!)

10 years ago - celebrity existed, but not in its current form, yes, there were still celebrity 'whores', party boys and girls, useless pop people and dull TV presenters, but luckily, we were not subjected to 'reality' TV shows, the way we are now, so the amount of 'celebrity' was limited!!

having talent was an important part of becoming a celebrity ten years ago...
now.... talent is not even relevant......the more ridiculous or brash you are.... the better your chances of becoming a celebrity....which is good for the masses ..it means anyone now can be a celebrity.........
