Arthritis, which simply means inflammation of a joint, has over 100 causes, many of which medical science has not yet elucidated. As a disease, it causes enormous pain and disability. At times, the auto-immune processes which can cause arthritis can also disfigure or kill. It is a major health problem which can afflict all ages, but its victims are generally older adults.

The drugs we use to help control the symptoms of arthritis (NSAIDS and opioid pain relievers) are dangerous and often poorly tolerated. For example, in the year 2000 more people died from the adverse effects of the NSAID class of drugs than perished from AIDS. Other drugs used by doctors to attack the causes of certain types of arthritis (anti-metabolites) can be just as deadly.

However, even with all of medicine's pharmacological arsenal being brought to bear on arthritic illness, pain and suffering are not adequately controlled in a significant number----- and perhaps the majority of patients. The Mangostee Xanthones (phytoceuticals), alpha and gamma mangostin, have proven remarkably effective as anti-inflammatory agents in animal studies. They have demonstrated both COX-1 and COX-2 inhibition without affecting blood clotting or damaging the stomach lining. Obviously, they do not simply work as COX inhibitors, but must also possess other, as yet, unclarified protective mechanisims besides blocking prostaglandins and other pro-inflammatory mediators.

I have been asked why the mangosteen does'nt have the deadly side effects of the pharmacological COX-2 inhibitors if it alsdo blocks the production of the COX-2 enzyme. The answer isn't simple and the reason for the adverse effects of the drugs is'nt fully understood yet, but, as simply as I can, I will tell you what I think happens.

The mechanism by which the mangosteen controls or blocks the COX-2 enzyme has been elucidated by Japanese researchers, and it differs from the pathways through which the drugs act to inhibit production of the same enzyme.
Mangosteen shuts off the production of COX-2 AT THE LEVEL OF THE GENE. Therefore, no enzymatic reactions involved in the production of inflammatory mediators even take place. In contrast, the drugs interfere with the production of COX-2 downstream, so to speak, from the gene, after some enzymatic reaction has already taken place. Whether this is the important or pivotal difference between the two mechanisims or not, it is not unreasonable to suppose that it may be.

Additionally, I would like to point out the difference between the way that drugs ( as extremely powerful compounds) act alone, whereas whole food supplements possess no individually potent elements to act in isolation but rather have many elements which act synergistically to produce powerful results.

Mangosteen juice, in an initial regimen of 2 oz. per day with meals, declining to 1oz. three times a day with meals over several weeks, has proven effective as both single therapy for arthritic pain or when added to other remedies.

The above extracts are from J. Frederic Templeman's book ; Medical Applications for Mangosteen

Mangosteen IS available in Australia, absolutely no problems in accessability.
