I've built several computers but have never had this problem. This is a brand new build and I'm installing windows xp for the first time. The installations gets to the blue screen that gives you the option to modify partitions, install, etc...Usually when I get to this stage the computer just reboots out of nowhere. As far as I know my RAM and Hard drive are good and everything is hooked up correctly. Please Help ASAP!!

You can boot from a Win98 boot floppy, that'll rule out WinXP's installation as the cause.

My guess: processor heat sink
Remove it, clean it, reapply thermal paste, reseat it.

Next guess would be RAM, remove and reseat that, then try another stick.

Remove and reseat everything.

Could be the PSU not putting out a strong, steady supply of power. Stick a temp replacement in and see if that fixes it.

Last guess, bad component. I had a system that would randomly shut off. It would stay on anywhere from a few minutes to a few days. Turned out to be the mobo.

Good luck, tracking down the culprit can get very tedious.

We've had this a few times. Had to kill the MBR with a program like "ZAP". Then it installs ok.

Have something similar with a bad memory chip. If you have 2, take 1 out.

Can download and run DFT (Drive Fitness Test) from IBM for free. That is a quick test of the the harddrive.

You kind of answered your own question.

Recheck it everything again including the bios setup, but it might be your memory... Try a different stick and see what happens.

Before you do anything drastic, install UBUNTU. It's up to date, so if it installs O.K. there is a compatibilaty issue with XP.
