I always say no, it had ran it's course.
My Dad says yes, there was still life in the old dog yet.

I agree with your dad. I love Fawlty Towers and John Cleese.

It had run its course, the reason you all love it so much is that it did not die a death or anything close. When a master like Cleese know they are making a short term show they re is no reason to use any jokes but the best, the best story lines and episode plots. Had he chosen to do more the quality's of the show you all love would slowly fade and altho i myself love to watch a show for 9 series, that's what faulty towers would have become, another one of those shows. The call was made at the start and i have so much respect for that. Who has a bad word to say for the man? Exactly.
That show will always be in my heart and i have been known to laugh at the odd joke that i heard in my head because i watched it so much, so long ago lol.

Additional:
John Cleese and Connie Booth (the co-writers) decided they had taken Fawlty Towers as far as they could so they quit whilst they were ahead. It was not because they divorced — their divorce was in 1976, between series one and two. This split was relatively amicable and they went on to write the second series together. Some plots for a Fawlty Towers film were discussed but this never came to fruition.

Additional Additional:
There were twelve! Two series of six each. Many people think there are missing episodes somewhere or swear blind they have seen other Fawlty Towers stuff. There was no film, no Christmas specials. Many years ago, there was a television commercial for Carte D'or ice cream (or it may have been wine) with Basil and Manuel.

No, they did well to stop when they did as all the episodes they made are classics!

So many series end up getting ruined as they try and stretch them out - you end up losing interest and ultimately forget them.

I still watch Fawlty Towers sometimes and still laugh a lot - not many shows you can say that about!

(another classic that had just the right amount is Blackadder - though they made 4 series, each series was not overdone)

12 months,12 apostles, 12 episodes of The Lanky Lord Of Laughter.
There was no need to make any more. That's why we can remember each holy episode. In 30 years time, you won't be debating which was the funniest moment from "2 point 4 children"? Keep the faith.

Yes there should. There were only a few made and there were definitely ideas that could have been used. Why is it the good series only go on for a short time whereas the rubbish ones seem to go on forever?

It would have been nice but John Cleese and Connie Booth was divorced by this time and had moved onto other things. Maybe the difficult third series would not have been so funny and the programme subsequently tarnished

Let sleeping dogs .... and all that jazz.

No, leave it alone. A glorious piece of television which might, and probably will, be spoilt with another series.

John Cleese and co knew what they were doing when they stopped at 2.

Next you'll be asking if it should be remade with a younger cast !!!

Be gone....

I agree with your dad. It's one of the funniest series I have ever seen. We have the full series on a DVD collection and watch them when there's nothing good on t.v.(I hope you're reading this John Cleese)

be a bit late to do another series now and i imagine that if someone did commission it, there'd be different actors. i think it ended at the right time so everyone who likes it thinks of it fondly.

I think they stopped right at the correct time. You can over kill somethings., Its always good to leave people wanting more.

Its a shame they didnt do the same for Last of the Bleeding Summer Wine!
