First of all I think that by now we would have achieved equal rights like the Blacks in u.s.a.But on the whole we would not have developed and reached the present state. Moreover social barriers would have continued to grow and the great population of India would have suffered.

I know a few Indians whose parents grew up under British rule. And i have got to say that those Indians who grew up under British rule are among the most decent, intelligent, the most respected and the most kind and generous people i know.

The British gave India so much that India could not have possibly gained without them - both politically, culturally, socially. Britain gave India the very democratic roots that makes India the world's largest democracy. It passed onto India cutural traditions such as Cricket that make India one of the most admired sporting countries among the Commonwealth.

Its easy for some to criticise the British rule - but the British gave alot more than they took away.

India would almost certainly have rebelled in time. Britain would have had a difficult time holding on to India for longer than it had, and even then, it would have only been used as a pawn in the Cold War. Perhaps with less Russian influence due to strained relations with Pakistan already, there may have been less nuclear technology leaked, and both India and Pakistan would remain at odds as non-nuclear nations.

India would also have more difficulty democratizing with a later date of independence, such that the country would be in worse financial straits at this point in time. The differences are small, subtle, and probably difficult to predict.

In the end, the only clear upside I could see is a little bit less nuclear proliferation, and the most clear downside is that India would very likely be less democratic, more unstable, and likely poorer due to less foreign investment in building up industries in India.

we could praise British rule all we liked. But in reality, we would have been like the impoverished African nations. Imperialism and development cannot happen 2gether
No, the British did not give us democracy. We TOOK it. We could have become like china or the soviet union... a communist nation
but we CHOSE democracy... the hard way. To say the British gave us democracy would be saying that Hitler performed the houlacoust to teach the world to respect Jews!!!
Freedom has come at a price. and now we must look on. Would u really want to live in a nation with communal electorates, a nation that has no anthem and no flag of its own?
Never!

Perhaps, the caste system might have crumbled and equality of opportunity and equality before law might have gained credence.
India would have remained united along with pakistan and bangladesh, and the divide between the communities on the basis of religion, caste, region would have taken back seat. India might have emerged as more important than Britan for the Britishers themselves. Perhaps the British empire's capital might have been shifted from London to New Delhi

GREAT QUESTION MAN!
It is obvious down in the drains.India wouldnt be half of what it is today. The British would be committing daylight robbery.First they export our raw materials to Britain, then they bring it back to the shores of our own country and sell it in double the price
WHAT CAN YOU MAKE OUT FROM THIS?
The British were power hungry forever.

IF THEY CONTINUED RULING INDIA,INDIA WOULD HAVE GONE TO DOGS.

I as an Indian appreciate and respect the hardwork of great people to achieve Independence.

But what have we gained...Poverty, Corruuption, Pending Cases, Terrorism..........

Atleast Britishers when ruled us there was discipline, immediate punishment.

You have to bear in mind that 'India' would not exist at all if the British had never been there. It would be a series of princely states.

So the answer is it would be bigger - it would still include Pakistan and Bangladesh.

There would't have been Pakistan.India's present day politicians who aretreated as slaves would have sold Britain to Russia OR America without the knowledge of Britian and I am sure that the commercial brains in India are capable of achieving this.
