OJT has lots of pros and cons.

Pros:
1. Employee are exposed to real-time scenarios
2. Improves analytical and decision-making skills as they encounter real-life problems
3. improves efficiency and effectiveness as they get the hands-on training
4. Experience is gained thus enabling more confidence
5. Motivates the employee.

Cons
1. Costlier (in few cases like in aeronautics, marine engg)
2. If an employee makes errors it can cost the orgn a fortune, or will increase maintenance time and other non-productive time.
3. Employees overburdened to train the newcomers as well as to show their productivity.

Thus, depending on the circumstances and the scope, nature and field of business, OJT can be used as an effective tool.

My personal conclusion is that it's a great thing, but doesn't always transfer over to other jobs well, especially if there is no formal certification for the training.
