I graduated from high school, and went college as everyone had told me and expected me to do! Two years into college I become sick of it! I mean literally sick, I was always at the doctors office for something. Then I just couldn't get back into being in college. I didn't know what I wanted to do, or if the degree I obtained would help in the real world! So I decided to take a break from school and maybe get a job or try community college. During that time I was seeing a lot about the war in Iraq and decided I wanted to join the Air Force, I did a lot of research and joined, then I ended up in the hospital, because of that I have the opportunity to drop out of the Delayed Enlistment Program or change the date I'm scheduled to leave. I don't know whether I should go or stay and finish school. i really like all the Air Force has to offer, but i'm afraid to leave my family and friends, and don't know if i should get my degree first or if i'll regret not enlisting!!! advice please!

I just saw your name was a MS... Well I had intended this post for a guy, but if you're a girl - even cooler... just change all the gender-specific information!

There is no question. Here's exactly what you need to do.

0. Drop out of the delayed entry program and school completely

1. Get a job. Any job will do.

2. Save as much money as you can for about 1 year. You'll need around $8000 to comfortably complete this task from start to finish.

2.5 Best job would be an apprentice at a motorcycle repair/sales shop.

3. Buy a motorcycle (a touring bike, not a crotch-rocket - get AT LEAST a 1,000cc metric bike - [Yamaha, Suzuki] - get a used one that looks new (should cost around $1000-$3000). Do not get one that is too powerful though. Not exceeding 1600cc! Make sure the motorcycle has a windshield.

4. Buy 2 D.O.T. approved helmets (without face shields), Saddlebags, a small camping tent, and a rucksack, leather jacket and leather chaps and black leather boots and 2 pair of sunglasses and a laptop computer with wireless internet, fill rucksack with:
- small first aid kit
- small sleeping bag
- small 2 man tent
- single-burner propane stove
- 2 small propane tanks
- camping coffee pot
- propane lantern (small one)
- flashlight
- plastic forks, spoons and plates
- 1 roll of toilet paper
- 1 road atlas (that shows campsites)
- 2 blue spatterwear camping mugs
- 2 changes of clothes, xtra socks & underwear
- water.

Fill one saddlebag with tools for motorcycle maintenance. The other bag can hold the 2d helmet - for the girls who will inevitably want to ride.

5. Have a big going away party (DO NOT GET A GIRLFRIEND DURING THIS TIME)

6. Get your atlas and plan a 1 year trip around America, like one big circle, allowing at least 1 week in each major destination.

7. when it is warm, go north, when it is cold, go south. If you go to mexico, you'll need a passport starting 2008.

8. come back from your trip (you will not be the same person, especially after you've hung out at a few bikerbars and havegotten a few tattoos - and sell everything!

9. Go find your recruiter and enlist in the Air Force (Enlisted! not an Officer).

10. Get a long-enough contract (not over four years) to benefit you with an awesome education when you ETS.

11. By now, you'll have a pretty good idea of what you want to do with the rest of your life (Which will probably include a motorcycle, an atlas and a tent!) Find the perfect school and get your undergrad degree.

12. Find another school and get your masters degree.

13. Minor in some sort of art, preferably sculpture.

14. Pass this advice along to others and grow!

You do this in this particular order because after college, you're probably settling into a job, a life, a family and the opportunity to do these things will have disappeared.

Think about this... in the airforce you can get the training for the job you love in a lot less time. Plus you don't have to pay for it. You get top of the line job training and when you get out into the world after the Air Force you already are one step above everybody else and finding a job will be a walk in the park.

you're lucky to have so many options open to you. sounds like change doesnt come easily to you.dont be afraid of new challenges.you can make new friends.old ones will still be here when you return as will family. true friends would tell you to go for it. why be tied to staying just cos its a safe option? some people would love to be in your position.your sickness could just be plain old nerves.new things are always scary but i hope you do go or else you'll be looking back in years to come thinking if only.....

dude, you got some great opportunites going for you... no need to regret on whatever path you choose. but as far as family and friend... one way or another, if you really wish to enrich your life, you must leave one way or another so you can return and enrich their lives... good luck... oh, if you can, you may wish to speak to a few airforce folks about pursuiing a degree before or after joining the military...
