well im in korea and just visited this awesome budhist temple, and a monk explained that your hands are representative of each of you (the one bowing and the one being bowed to) and joining your hands together is symbolic of the two of you coming together.... you bow to honor this union, just like you bow (your head) to honor many diff gods in many diff religions, when in prayer....

usally when they put their hands togeather it means they are clapping and when they bow sometimes its because their back gives out
