How long does an astrological gemstone remains effective, do they need to be replaced with new or recharged?

I am speaking about astrological stones like Ruby, Sapphire etc. Please do not answer if you have no idea of what I am speaking about.

They do need a rinse in water and to sit in the sun to energize
If people touch the stones or even when you touch something you pick up unwanted energy.
A good cleansing and some sunshine and they are fully charged and ready to go : )

Can this even be measured? Jewels are solar batteries? If you can prove that gemstones can store and emit any kind of energy that would be good enough for someone to win a million dollars!
