Dowsing or divining is done using many different types of divining rod or pendulum. None of them work. On every occasion when dowsers have been tested where the conditions were agreed upon by all parties beforehand, no dowser has been better than statistically accurate.
Most dowsers believe they can do it but they can't demonstrate it when tested. Dowsers are usually genuine people unlike the charlatans such as psychics, clairvoyants and astrologers.
If anyone thinks they have genuine dowsing ability, there is $100,000 on offer in Australia and a million in the USA for anyone who can demonstrate any form of paranormal ability. See:

Water divination is practiced and can be used to locate water - usually a stream running underground. It has been conducted through history by many cultures throughout the world. It is also sometimes called 'dowsing'. Some people remain sceptical that this can be done.

Yes, if you know how to choose the right type of branch, with the correct v to the two branches that stick out, what you referred to as a Y, which I guess it is like this Y.
It's called Divining, I'm not sure if I spelled that correctly. People who have lived in places like hte Desert areas in Nevada, Utah and California, in the 1800's, many of them knew and had learned this skill as a way to survive where water was rare.
