I was listening to the radio this morning and they whgere talking about an experiment that is going to recreate the big bang that started the world (I hope they get it right!) but during that discussion there was talk about the number of dimensions we live in and the scientists were saying that some people believed there could be ten dimensions rather the current four.

Now being of a certain age I am a three dimension person so mention of a fourth was a bit of a surprise to me let alone a total of ten, can anybody explain in straightforward language please what these other dimensions are especially the fouth which apparently I should already know about.

The fourth dimension is Time, which you are likely to be aware of.

However, the other dimensions are not something that can be easily explained. The reason is that we have no ability to 'see' the other dimensions so how do we describe them?
Best to think of them purely theoretically in terms of physics and maths.

An analogy.....
Describe a new colour that has never been seen before.....

The fourth dimension is called time, which, for your sake I hope you are very much aware of. The other six have no straight forward or easy explanation to them at all. The human brain has no ability to see or recognise them let alone make sense of and understand them. I would think they are pretty much theoretical and very difficult to verify or prove. However I would say that non-existance of proof is not the same as proof of non-existance.

In brief - we exist is a multiverse, our universe is one of a possibly infinite number of universes who differ from one another by the values of the physical constants that operate in each one eg speed of light, gravitational constant etc. The set of such universes is of the order 10 to the power 100, and this is called 'the landscape'.
These universes (ours is 4D) exist embedded on a 10D brane (visualise as a membrane) which in turn occupies an 11D bulk with many other forms of branes. It is thought that the bulk is highly turbulent. When these branes collide, another universe is created, this could be happening all the time.
I don't know about you but this bakes my noodles!

It's called "parallel universes" and says there are an infinite number of universes... all equal and all separate... It's an old theory, but there is some interest in it.

The Big bang is in entirely different matter, so don't confuse the two.

Both of these topics are way beyond a simplistic 2 line answer... but there are tons of books on the subject in the Library.
