You may not have been around in the 60s and 70s. When the vets started coming home from the Vietnam war, liberals took it upon themselves to spit on all of them, call them "baby killers", and degrade them in any way they could because liberals are basically just mean people with loud voices.
This behavior included (and encouraged) discrimmination against them. When this happens in the job market, what can you do?

Veteran pensions and benefits have been cut to some extent, which makes it more difficult for veterans to rely on past service to help pay the bills. However, that is often supplemental income to most veterans.
The true reason is that many veterans come home with shell shock, post-traumatic stress disorder, or whatever you may call it. As well, many others are physically disabled from wartime wounds. Soldiers who cannot physically work are in difficult straits, although disability and veteran's benefits are usually enough that they can live in poor housing rather than no housing. Those who come back from service in bad mental health often have nowhere to turn but drugs and the street, trying to block out the pain of the sights they've seen.
It's not very logical that it happens, but that's what happens. Circumstances are different for many, some healthy troops end up on the curb for one reason or another, but the ones who tend to stay there are the ones who want nothing more than to forget.
Call or write your congressman, let them know that you demand better treatment of veterans, no more cuts to VA, and more mental health services for veterans. Remember, there's troops not over in Iraq that need plenty of support.

If what you ask is for a logical explanation, then the logic is a variety of factors that lead to one answer. One being, is more so then often-mental stability. The atrocities of war ,seeing children and women die before your eyes can damage anyone mentally. Knowing that you yourself has taken another life is psychologically emotional. If not given the proper help, some one like a veteran can and will probably end up picking up habits to cope with his/her emotional scars.-such as drug abuse and alcoholism, this just leads to a life down the gutter. Some vet's even comeback with no legs or one arm, it is very difficult for them to continue a normal life and thus they are just as vulnerable mentally as well as emotionally.
But just comes to show you how well we treat our veterans here in the U.S. Both sides-Dem and rep politicians , often make praise to the troops, often tell you how grateful they are our our troops.. But what about after they have killed for us, after they have lost a leg, their vision, their friends, their home, their life....Do these republican politicians still act like they care? How about these democrat leaders, do they even say thank you?
We need to take better care of our veterans, if they fought for us the least we can do is fight for them back home. Our politicians will not move unless we demand it!!

Yeah, because we have an overpowering sense of greed running our Federal Government without a shread of human decency among the entire neo-con power elite.
