What was the relationship between Theoden and Ayowin.?

In the movie The Two Towers from The Lord of the Rings King Theoden hints that their relationship may have been more than just uncle/neice.

Nope, nothing more than a caring relationship between uncle and niece.

SICK. I only know of the Uncle niece relations. She did hold a miltiary position(Shield Maiden). She was probably sworn to protect the king.
