There is 18 hour difference between Melbourne and San Fransisco so at 8 PM in Melbourne it is midnight in San Fransisco

San Francisco is 17 hours (earlier )than Melbourne, Australia, so if it is 8 pm Wednesday in Melbourne, it will be 1 am in San Francisco. (Of course, it is past the International Dateline ).
Melbourne uses Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT), but several of the Australian states have different times, as some do not use Daylight Savings Time.
