Does the DNC disavow inherited wealth or porpose land taxes on private properties worth over a set amount of money? It doesn't seem to have very strong union ties anymore.
If not, what makes it a socialist party?

This is a genuine question, not name calling. It seems that the parties in the US and their counterparts in Australia are different. Our current Government is on the conservative side but it does provide universal health and universal access to college education.
I wanted to know what the Dems are like because we only really hear about the candidates over here and they are all really wealthy and supported by high profile millionaires. I was struggling to see how they would relate to the working class at all. And the Dems have their roots in socialist philosophy so I was wondering how they could accept candidates who are so wealthy, e.g. John Kerry (wealth through marriage) and the Kennedys - inherited wealth. Money is very importnant to the Kennedy clan yet they say they support the working class. Odd, they've never rubbed shoulders with the working class in their lives.
Yet the republicans seem to deny science in formulating policies - e.g. global warming and same sex rights.

Hi Nat,
The DNC isn't a socialist party. They do favor greater taxes on inherited wealth because they believe that those who can afford the most in society, and those who benefit most from society (i.e. the wealthy) should pay the most for society's maintainence.
You're somewhat right about the unions. Over the last 25 years, more union members have voted Republican; but the Democrats still get most of the union campaign contributions. This is because the union members do not vote on union campaign contributions. So, the Rank and File members vote Republican, but the union leadership contributes to Democrats.
Hope this helps. Cheers.

It's not necessarily that the democratic party is socialist. That term is a philsophy yet to even be put fully in practice.
Demographic and circumstance dicates that government is getting bigger and that leftism is in demand. Why do I say this?
Well, in 65, there was several pieces of legislation put through a strongly held democrat congress. Of the many I'll focus on a few. There was medicare/advent of the welfare state and the change in immigration. Immigration has primarily came from latin american (almost by default of the law).
Latin America is incredibly influenced by eastern european philosophies. It was conquered by the Spanish (afterall), and they too have continuely followed leftism. So therefore given the culture of family first in latin america, and the political culture of leftism,....it's just natural that individualism and small government aren't necessarily the best for those immigrating here.
Taken that in account and overwhelming use of the welfare state preceding the years of it's invention...with an immigrating demographic that is almost always poor and leftists in nature, we're prone to move left.
Union have for years been complaining about illegal immigration, which has perpetuated in size since the change in immigration laws. The natural automation (of industry) and process of a global economy is marking them off as less important to the overall power the democratic party, and it seems the leadership of the unions think the solution is merely more left votes...thus more illegal immigration or immigration in general (from key countries).
So there's sort of an internal war within the democratic party, as far as what constituents matter the most. And since the structure promotes bigger government and the demographics of that structure perpetuates it...it makes the democrats appear to be leftists, when in fact the country is just changing due to long-term policy.
You can even say some in the Republican party are left enough to be called old democrats.
--------
By the way, I'm for small government, wise immigration policy, and I'm for democrats like RFK or JFK. Now-a-days you would call that semi-conservative. So I don't support democrats and find it a bit hard to support Republicans....mostly their leadership.

One of the biggest contributors if not the biggest to the Democrats are the unions. Why do you think the liberals hate stores like walmart so much? They don't care about the people who work for them like they say they are only concerned that it isn't unionized and they ain't getting their rightful (as they see it)cut of the pie. Quite a few of the liberals in congress are rich because of money they inherited or married into. And they use every tax loophole they can to pay the least amount of taxes possible. Yet they can't wait to get rid of the tax cuts bush implemented if they gain control of the white house. Socialism is the right way to run a country to their way of thinking. Just because it hasn't worked in other countries doesn't sway them at all. They are elitists and being in power is their birth right. And socialism is the best way to control the country. After all they are smarter and know what is best for us. I don't think we will ever become a truly socialist country at least not in my life time because of the way our forefathers set up the government. But that won't stop them from trying. I do see this country turning more and more liberal as the years go by and it scares the heck out of me to think what our childrens children will have to grow up in if we continue on this road.

Ah yes, the old name calling trick. If anyone cares about the welfare of the people, their health, their education, their civil rights and their civil liberties over the welfare of corporations then they are "socialists"! My Gods people, stay away from labels and THINK rationally.

Basically look at East Germany the former USSR ,Cuba .
Thats what the far left want to turn America into.
A land where the government controls your every move, but in turn protects you from yourself since you're not responsible enough to do so.
But hey you have "free healthcare " that 70% of you income paid for.
Socialism is for lazy people who don't wanna go anywhere in life and are too weak to defend themselves.

The only real problem with us Dems is that we disagree with the fascist policies of the repugs. The repugs are an ignorant bunch who try to paint everyone as unamerican who disagree with their limited, unconstitutional agenda.
