You should not have to give a reason but should produce a medical certificate which does not necessarily have to have your sickness written on it. If, however, you are continually sick and away from work, your employer has the right to send you to their nominated doctor and request a medical report to determine whether or not you are seriously ill and whether this will impact on your future employment with the employer. The employer would be liable for the costs of this. Some organisations will try and accomodate the employee's sickness and maybe offer the employee alternative positions within the organisation that will not have an impact on the employee's health. the only reasons you should ever need to use for a day off is i am not feeling well or i need to take some personal time. no other info is required.

I feel you can specify the reason if it isnt that personal (eg:fever, headache, etc). If u wish not to disclose it, you can mention that you are not well... :) without any reason
