This one girl who I know is a friend of mine. There’s one problem—Even though I see her at times… I don’t know how to verbally communicate effectively with her since she is deaf. I usually email her or we use the computer using messenger. But in person… do I write her what I want to talk to her about, create cards or hold flash cards to her? How do I communicate with her?

My coworker is deaf, and we communicate by silly hand gestures, facial expressions and sometimes notes. He also lip reads pretty well. Most of the time, we don't need notes, cause my made up hand gestures seem to get through to him.

I think it's great that you want to communicate with your friend in person. One thing you could do is ask her to teach you sign language. I would bet she'd be happy to. I know that some deaf people are hard to understand when they try to speak--is she one of them? If so, and if she has trouble lip-reading, a whiteboard or pen and paper would be helpful until you got the hang of signing.
Good luck.

Many deaf people lip read. You can also look up American Sign Language or amislan on the computer and it will give you many signs.

You could first e-mail her weather she can lip-read well enogh. If not ask her if she can understand sign language. If she still cant, its best you bring a small whiteboard and marker pen to write down for her.
