That dark brown vomit might be what is called in the medical field as "coffee ground emesis", which results from a bleed somewhere in the upper gastrointestinal tract. I think he needs to see a doctor asap, even if it means getting access to a doc in the Emergency Room. Bleeding can be acute (sudden) or chronic (long term). But vomiting coffee ground emesis (yes, this is a medical and technical term that medical personnel call this type of vomit) needs to be evaluated by a professional. I hope he gets better soon, please if you can look up the term and you can decide if that's what it is or not...old blood can look like chewed up tobacco or 'coffee grounds'. Any google search for 'coffee ground emesis' will have lots of results. I've attached an article below about it, but there are tons of it on the web.

It isn't necessarily attributed to what he ate today. It could be what he ate yesterday as well.
You mentioned chewing tobacco. Does he chew tobacco? He may be swallowing it.
If this has been sitting in his stomach for 24+ hours, the substance may have been affected by stomach acid and enzymes.
Worst case scenario might be that it has to do with the drinking as in a bleeding ulcer or a peptic ulcer in the g.i. tract even. (g.i. = gastro intestinal)
Has he eaten anything or just been drinking? My brothers are alcoholics and I am a rehabilitated alcoholic so I have seen some interesting regurgitations in my drinking days.
From the colour you describe, I have even experienced drinking binges so severe that I have thrown up the contents of my bowels. (yes, that means vomiting up feces)
In any case, I don't think you should avoid seeing a doctor just because he doesn't have one. This sounds like it might even be blood from a ruptured vein in the small intestine.

I was sick last week and when I vomitted it was a darker color. I think I had food poisoning though and nothing I ate was brown. It might have just been the bacteria that made the vomitus a different color. It defiantely wasn't blood though. I wouldn't worry too much about it though unless he is complaining of stomach pains. Just make sure you keep him hydrated with plenty of liquids, water is okay but Gatorade/Powerade is the best.

Vomit often referred to as "Coffee Grounds" or like you said tobacco chew is related to a Gastrointestinal Tract bleed. It can be a very serious issue and he should be taken to the ER as soon as possible as his symptoms suggest a possible life threatening condition.
