While the circumstances were different - the 1986 rebellion in the Philippines being against a corrupt Ferdinand Marcos government - a local political phenomenon, against the Mahatma Gandhi protest against British rule in India, both were non-violent protests.

In the Philippines example, Corozon Aquino - the wife of deceased politician Beningo Aquinom, urged people to "experiment with nonviolent forms of protest" by a seven-part program of nonviolent resistance, including a one-day work stoppage and a boycott of Marcos-controlled banks, stores and newspapers. This resulted in key military and government advisors withdrawing support for Marcos and joining the non-violent protest against Marcos.

While Marcos controlled the government and the military, it was Corozon Aquino's form of non-violent protest that brought about revolution and change without the bloodshed of a civil war.
