it actually depends upon the type of processor. if u really want to start looking into the internals of a microprocessor, i suggest u first look at the simplest ones -> intel 8085 and intel 8086. these two processors are the ancestors of the x86 family of processors and also of the pentium family to some extend.

8085 and 8086 will show u the basic concepts involved behind each module in the processor... once u know them then u can look at the x86 family which includes the famous 186,286 and 386 intel processors. then u can graduate to readin on pentium architectures.

1. If you go and checkout some marketing posters Intel put out before you will find a vivid poster describing the elements of Pentiums, largely applicable to general computer science, I know that a processor have FPU, IPU, registers, microcode table, processing pipelines, etc.

2. Big square thing usually, and just the chip underneath it.

microprocessors are basically made of transistors, diodes capacitors, resistors. these components construct together digital logic circuits like gates, counters, registers .... etc. & this circiuts make calculations & comprations. each processors may have more than 25 million transistors inside.
