I'm 62 now, and I never felt like that. I must say I worked as an IT consultant, which is quite motivating, and I learned new things all my life long.
Now I am retired and I took painting classes and I am now an artist -in another domain than IT.
I'm sure everyone has regrets, like "if I had taken maths more seriously I would be a rocket scientist (or simply an engineer)" But that is life, and nobody can live of "if only's".
To give up in life is a sad thing, and I hope you are not one of those. There is always something to do, even if you live for a hundred years, if only you keep healthy enough.

I think older people grumble a lot because they have the life experience that ALL youth are yet to aquire and are shown nothing but disrespect and told to be quiet when they are offering up positive constructive information that comes from experience. I wish i had listened to my elders it would have saved me a lot of heartache and given me great oppotunities. One day you will be old, not as young as 40, and you will be wondering why your kids are not paying any attention to your misguided ramblings. Good luck.

I couldn't understand it either, until I fell into this age group ...
PS: Re-read this question - guess I did not read it properly .. I never gave up in life and am still going strong ... although there are some things I guess I would have done differently had I known better at the time...but then again, I may not have been where I am now if I chose differently ... LOVE LIFE

So you are saying that they should just think back to the days when AIDS crushed any chance they had of having sex on prom night. Maybe now you know why they were so uptight. They weren't getting any and weren't going to get any for quite a while.
BTW, middle age starts at 44 these days.
