Mine started sleeping through the night around 3 months. When they are new borns and only drinking about 2 oz at a time every 1 and a half to 2 hours the need to wake up during the night. But when they start taking more food during the day ( 4-6 oz at a time, with longer breaks in between) they can sleep during the night.

Fortunately I was blessed with 2 sleepers. My firs, a daughter, took only about 5 days to sleep through the night. My second, a son, took about 2 weeks because he had his days and nights mixed up. During those 2 weeks he slept through the day and was up every couple of hours through the night. But I think that made him into the love bug he is today. He is 3 now and he is such a cuddle bug. I remember the night after I had him, I asked that he stay in the hospital nursey so I could get some sleep. Well they came in my room at 5:00 a.m. and told me that he wanted to cuddle. He is way more affectionate than my daughter ever was. Enjoy your baby. Alot of it had to do with the nurses at the hospital waking the babies up every 2-3 hours to feel them 1 oz of formula. I took my parents' advice. Do not wake the baby up to feed it. When the baby is hungry they will let you know. Let them drink as much as they want. Obviosly they will sleep longer on a full belly. My kids are still sleepers. They can each sleep for 12 hours at a time.

I have four, the last two are twins, and they all slept through the night at different ages
My first was about 9 months old I think, but I found out that when he was younger, he was being put to bed entirely too early. I guess there's no way to really tell with him
My second one was about 3 months old, and slept through the night. That was nice
My twins were about 6 months old before they started sleeping through the night, but it didn't happen EVERY night. They were probably 7 or 8 months old, before they both slept through the night, every night. I think it's probably harder for them, because they shared a bed. So I'm sure one could and did wake up another sometimes.

mine started sleeping after 5 months. Even now he troubles me sometimes. But when he sleeps once, he gets up in the morning with us. The best way is to make the baby lie down with you and turn off the light giving an indication that this is sleep time. then you can pretend that you are sleeping and the baby will learn to sleep like that. Sleeping ritual has to remain the same everyday and that is how kids learn that this is sleep time. If you are breast feeding and the child asks for feed often, ask your partner to make him sleep. This also helps. I have suffered a long time with this problem. I know how sleepless it can get. It actually starts affecting your health. Lie down with your child. that will help. It is said that a child sleeps longer with formula milk. Nothing worked with my child. It will take its own time. sleep when the baby sleeps.
Best of luck.

I saw all the answer above me and I like to offer my experience on how to train your baby to sleep over the night.
Your baby will not able to know what is day and night.
They wake up just to get feed.
If you constantly feed them every 2~3 hours it become a habit, and your baby will wake up every 2~3 hours asking for milk.
What we did here is that we train them after 1 month when they get stronger.
During night time say they wait up at 1am, 3am and 5am.
The first week you feed them with water for the 1am meal.
Do it for 2day, your baby won't bother to wait up for water for the 1am meal at the 3rd day.
Imagine you can sleep from 11 to 3 o'**** :).
Let your baby stabalize for the new drinking timing until the end of the week.
For week 2, do the same thing for the 3am meal and you can enjoy sleeping sleeping from 11 to 5am at the 3rd day of second week.
Repeat the same on week 3 for the 5am meal.
Your baby will sleep through the night from then on.

Both of my (breastfed) children slept through from about 8 weeks until they were six months old. From that time they woke at least once a night until 18 months.
A great book I read is called the No Cry Sleep Solution.

I agree, it does vary with the baby. But i will tell you if you are breastfeeding, the baby gets up every few hours to eat. My daughter did that but when i stopped producing milk and switched to the bottle thats when she started sleeping through the night. It is becaise the formula fills the baby up more and helps it sleep.

Six hours is a good rest for a wee baby. Is the baby getting to nap during the day? (I assume so.)
Mine had days&nights all mixed around until he hit about 10 or so pounds. He then got about six hours a night. Then, he started to drop (exclusively breast) feedings in the night as he saw fit. We, three months later, now get about 8 hours at a time! Depending on the age of your baby, try to keep to their schedule. I wouldn't drop feeding for them, they will let you know.
I always tried to (nap a lot!) open blinds, etc. during the day, and mellowed things out at night to help him appropriate to the time of day.
To be honest, I miss getting up at night with him. Enjoy it, it goes by all to quickly.
