Automobile airbags are inflated by nitrogen gas, generated from the explosive decomposition of solid sodium azide:
2NaN3---->2Na + 3N2

What volume of N2 at 1°C and 0.96 atm pressure can be produced from the decomposition of 12.2 g of NaN3?

Umm..ya. How do I do this?

Take it one step at a time. First look at the balanced equation for the reaction:

2 NaN3 --> 2 Na + 3 N2

The coefficients tell you that for every 2 moles of NaN3, you will get 3 moles of N2 gas (assuming that all of the sodium azide reacts). This means 3/2 = 1.5 times as much.

Next, figure out how many moles of Sodium azide react. This will be the number of grams divided by the molecular mass of the NaN3 (1 * atomic mass of Na + 3 * atomic mass of N)

12.2 g / 65.01 g/mole = 0.1877 moles of NaN3

But we need 1.5 times as much:

0.1877 moles * 1.5 = 0.2816 moles of N2

Assuming that the Nitrogen gas produced acts like an ideal gas, then PV = nRT or V = nRT / P

R = general gas constant = 0.0820574587 L - atm / °K - mole
The temperature is in Kelvin = (1 °C + 273°) = 274 °K

V = 0.2816 moles * 0.0821 * (274 °K) / 0.96 atm
= 6.599 Liters

rounded to 3 significant figures V = 6.60 Liters

Ok I don't have time to do number pressing one of the next answers can copy my formulas for you.

2 moles of NaN3 make 3 moles of N2 gas so its a 2:3 ratio

Next work out the Molecular mass of NaN3 and then the number of
moles of NaN3 (number of moles = 12.2 g / molecular mass of NaN3)

As its a 2:3 ratio dive the number of moles of NaN3 by 2 and then times the answer my 3

No of moles of N2 produce = Number of moles of NaN3 x (3/2)

Then using the idea gas law.

PV = nRT
where P = pressure
V = volume
n = number of moles of N2 gas
R the idea gas constant
T temp in kevlien

Rearrange the formula to get
V = (nRT)/P

Now sub in n, R, T and P

Use the molar ratio to get the info you need then
PV=nRT
You have P, n, R. I would assume that T is just standard conditions.Plugin the numbers and solve for V.

Edit: too late
