i am running WinXP-SP2 on both
Desktop Configuration: (HCL make 2005 model) P3, 128 MB Ram and already using the internet thru LAN cable ..with IP address provided by my ISP,will it affect my computer if i try to connect another computer via LAN
Laptop Configuaration: ASUS 2006 Model -AMD 256 MB Ram with all altest features available over it
which kind od drivers needed to installed as my desktop CD ROM not functioning...and i nned to urgently shift hundreds of GB of data from it

how to identify crossover cable.?

I take it you have a cable modem hookup? In order to run both on the same network you will require an Ethernet Broadband Router 4-port.

Internet > Cable Modem > Router > Both PCs

Make sure they are both in the same workgroup.
Right click My Computer > Properties > Computer Name (Verify workgroup names, if different click on change, rename and reboot)

You need either of the following


1. A crossover LAN cable
This is enoug if only systems you have to connect are our laptop and the desktop, nothing else. One end gets connected to your laptop and the other to your desktop



2.Two straight LAN cables and a switch/hub
That will allow you to add additional devices to the network as well.

A crossover LAN cable is require for connecting both of ur computer through lan.......... connect ur computer and laptop with cable and configure Ip address of same series on ur computer for communication. nothing else.once u connection is establish u can move anything u want to move................
