Some believe it is the core of their existence. Others use religion as a crutch to get over their hard times, and then forget it. Some wonder what you are talking about.
Believing in God can be comforting at times, but where is God when you need comforting the most?
I believe He is with us, because I need peace. Desired? Yes please.
I already exist.

During 1800s, Anthropologists had a problem as to how
to classify human beings. One researcher proposed the
expression "intelligent animal". After advanced studies
on monkeys, it was dropped. Another researcher proposed
"tool using animal". After observing some animals
making wooden tools and sharpening them with knife like
stones, it was dropped. Another researcher proposed
"weapon using animal". A decade ago, a rare film was
shot in African forests. One short monkey was hit very
badly by a big monkey. The short monkey prepared a
wooden knife using stones and hid it on the top of a
tree. After some days, when the big monkey came to
attack the short monkey, it ran up to the tree for the
weapon it has hid and killed the big monkey. The one
thing that the anthropologists found with any group of
human beings, even if they did not have contacts with
the out side world for thousands of years, is
spirituality with some form of religion. So, man is a
"spiritual animal" if you want to call him that way.

The Upanishads say that "Manush" (human) was so named
because he has "Manas" a mind higher than that of the
animals which realises the divinity in creation. It was
present since the creation of human beings. Religion is
the characteristic feature of most of the human beings.
It is as eternal and and as unchanging as the Almighty.
Disbelief by a few will not affect it.

A French philosopher (I think it is Rousseau) said "religion is the opium of people". So do you need opium to survive ?
I concede that many people, especially those unable to face their own death, need or want to believe in "something". That something can be God, metempsychosis or the gardens of Allah, never mind. But you can live being an atheist too, and have a true spirituality as well.

I personally would separate the concept of religion and spirituality first hand. As for religion, in many cases, it is DESIRED by one to belong to something bigger so that one can elevate their ego above others. "You don't believe in my God and I am better than you until you do believe in my God" might be the case for a stereotypical consersative christian. However, one who is a Christian (You could use any religion here), but uses it to elevate his spirit as opposed to his ego, may not need to do this for his/her existence, but may increase the value of his/her existence.

Religion is the way one lives ones life, and treat others and oneself. It is interwoven with ones relationship with the deity one believes in. What is desired in ones religion is that one measures up to the highest ideals that are espoused in ones faith.

You're asking if God created man or man created God.

You need a God to have any form of purpose in life.
Whether you believe or not is another thing, it's something called faith.

I believe that every person has that same option to believe what they choose to, for what ever reason it's all up to that person.. securing a reason only lends credence to the keeping up with the Jones' mindset.
