Your question sounds a bit loaded...
If you've been paying attention to world events over the past 19 years, you'ld understand that there are enemies of the U.S. who want to kill us. We had a few warning shots previously - a U.S. embassy here, a hijacking there, a Trade Center bomb, etc... These were the precursor to the coordinated 9/11 attacks aimed at decimating as many U.S. civilians as possible. Statements from terrorists have unswervingly been that their goal, which they are willing to die for, is to either convert America to Islam or kill as many of us as possible. Watch the last Barbara Walters interview with captured terrorists for a clear understanding of this.
We can deal with future attacks like these in very few ways. We can either allow them to happen again and treat the results as criminal matters (although the perpetrators, usually suicide bombers will already be dead). Or we can address them militarily but only defensively on our own soil, essentially allowing terrorists to plan, acquire funds, training, weapons and people in preparation for these attacks. Or we can proactively go after them on their turf before they have a chance to coordinate more attacks.
A common mis-perception is that these people are reasonable and think like us. They do not. They are single minded and will stop at nothing to achieve their goal. You cannot bargain with them. You cannot compromise or reach an agreement with them. They will not relent until more American civilians (your family and mine) are dead. For this reason, I strongly favor a pre-emptive defense strategy.
Are we wasting 100's of billions? Not if the money is spent securing America and it's population by making a strong ally of one of our previous threats. Not if it means spreading democracy in the middle east and showing people that self-rule is always more favorable than tyranny and dictatorship. Not if it's removed a dictator who killed 600,000 of his own people and was planning on spreading this kind of hatred into Israel and Saudi-Arabia. Not if it helps bring about more world peace and security.
Peace and freedom aren't free. It comes at a price and it's hard work. All evil requires to conquer is for good to do nothing. Historically speaking, true lasting peace has never come about by itself or through in-action. It is fought for and earned.
I hope you will consider my opposing viewpoint carefully and without bias. Thanks!

There are people whose aim in life is to destroy the United States and any other country that shares our ideals.
A tactical decision was made to pre-emptively strike at those people, and at the same time, free a country long held under an oppressive dictatorship.
Useless? I respectfully disagree. The management of that action has been badly handled, and it is certainly true that some money has been wasted, although hundreds of billions is an exaggerration. But useless? I think the time had passed when the US needed to exert itself on the world stage in response to terrorism, and in many ways - and in many places - the war has had positive results.

You've had some very good answers. I want to readjust your question with this analogy.
Parents did not waste their money on their child from birth until adulthood. Before that time they protect their child from all danger and harm. Their whole live is at times a thankless sacrifice but it is necessary and ensures that their child as an adult and leaves home becomes responsible for his own future. That he will live a good and prosperous life. This is what the USA military is doing for you right now.
I think instead that it is the terrorists and rogue leaders seeking nuclear capability that will disrupt international stability are the ones wasting their money and ruining the lives of their followers and citizens.

You breath the very air that war has given you, You may enjoy being of many different religions, wear different clothing, come and go where ever you want to. Eat what you will, actually participate in electing our leadership, drive nice cars, You are FREE,.....and the reason that you are free is because of me and my comrades going back to the Indian wars, we have given so much for you, and we have died in war just for you. I am a professional solder, now retired but none the less I am still a service man. You speak of these billions of dollars like they are yours, guess what they are mine also, and I don't mind a bit that they are being spent as I am able to sleep at night. You need to understand that you are no longer safe, not because of the service man/woman but because the Democratic party wants ill advisedly to end our presents in Iraq. Because you have listened to democrat demagoguery you are unaware that most of the insurgents are not from Ieaq but from other Muslim countrys they have come to kill the infedel, and when we leave that will end it according to you, ( I guess) My question to you is just where do you think these insurgents are going to go.......home? I don't think so they are come to America. Don't believe me? What do you think happened in Utah less than a month ago. Five people wer killed by a muslim 18 year old boy and he wanted to kill more. You didn't ask this question because you wanted this kind of an answer, you wanted people to agree with you and that way you can sit back and be smug,.... to me you are a loser but we will continue to protect you because you are unable to do it yourself

No ones burning the cash, how is it wasted? Every dollar spent is a dollar someone earns. Most of it right here in the US in the form of wages, munitions, medicines, et al.
I've heard this lineage before. But the answer was intriguing, since money doesn't "disappear". Someone gets it. The better debate might be who is getting it, and, in truth, most goes back into our own economy. Where, of course, it creates more jobs, and creates more taxes, again.

Let's see. Do you think that the over 3000 victims of 9/11 might have something to do with it? You obviously didn't have a loved one get blown up or burned alive during that attack or you wouldn't ask this question. Educate before you criticize.

It is simple. Americans are judgemental and rich. And, Americans are born cowboys and cowgirls who love to shot guns and drop bombs on other people, or kill barbarions from the American perspective.
The only way to deal with Americans is to beat them at their own game.
