California has one of the highest tax rates of any state. I live near San Francisco. (About an hours drive) and stopped going there years ago. If you don't have to work in San Francisco then you will probably like it. I don't know your financial situation, but rent is very high in that part of the state, and the prices on homes for sale are out of this world! I am not against anything people do as long as it doesn't break the law. But the beautiful city of San Francisco seemingly has been taken over by cross dressing transvestites and gay people who think it's their duty to flaunt their life style as much as possible in public. All that area is beautiful to look at but I would not be happy living there. It is also a magnet for the homeless. but other then that it's ok lol good weather almost year around.

Log onto the website for the State of California. You'll be able to find out there. California is one of the more aggresive taxation states in the USA, however, so good luck.
If it were possible, California would even tax sunshine.
Some States have no tax on personal income, like Texas or Nevada.

In California you would pay the following:
US Federal Income Tax
OASDI Social Security Tax and Medicare Tax
California State Income Tax
All of these are deducted automatically from your paycheck.
I used to do a payroll years ago for a firm in California. The state tax did not strike me as being substantially different from other American states.

you might want to call some tax professionals in the area you plan to live to get a complete idea of what your tax liability will be.
