I go to a sunlit, green clearing in the woods. There are flowers and water ripples nearby. I bring others there to talk with me.
Patois' answer explains why a padded room would be a safe and comfortable place to calm yourself.
If you've ever done contemplative meditation or self-hypnosis, it is beneficial to have a "special place" to go to.

As a nurse, I've noticed that we do not consider carefully or in a sophisticated way the milieu or surrounding environment in which we place ourselves in artificial places, such as our homes, schools and work places. The art of Phen Shui, not the modern "Earth Muffin" version, but the ancient science of creating most healthy balance and harmony in our man-made environments acknowledges the five human senses more than does Western architecture. We have learned a little about which colors to paint an institutional room, such as an ER, in which to promote calm or happy or peaceful or trusting feelings. But, we are very primitive in our understandings of how to create healthy interior spaces. I saw a great exhibit in Chicago in a museum once in which only young children were allowed to enjoy a huge room-size hands-on exhibit where they could alter the actual dimensions of interior spaces by drawing down and hooking here and there ceilings of canvas. The children were allowed to free-form their own desired spaces and the results were exciting. One of the benefits of "padded cells" is the sound buffering they can afford. People just do not understand how unhealthy and maddening all the noise is around us, especially frequencies of sounds that our hearing and nervous systems are being bombarded with constantly from microwave and radio waves and other man-made electromagentic fields even from electrical wiring and appliances in our homes. A padded room cuts down on a lot of noise. Noise pollution is one of our society's greatest cause of physical and mental disease, and yet we face it as a necessary evil. We do not have to, though. Also, a padded room harkens in us the womb/padded crib safety zone feeling. There are beautiful "Great" rooms in many homes today, and I like them. But, we humans usually gravitate to a smaller room for rest and relaxation. Also, most padded rooms that I have seen felt wonderful on my feet. So many of the atrifically hard and unhealthy surfaces we have to walk on every day take a terrible toll on our energy, our spines and our comfort. Just some random thoughts.

I think if you can scream, kick and hit the wall It may be of help. It could help you rid yourself of repressed anger!
I have never been in one my self but when you go into one in a hospital setting I believe you are locked in, and there are no windows that would make one feel trapped unless they could get out at any time.

This is why padded rooms are used in hospitals and prisons.
To my knowledge it has never been scientifically proven as a treatment.

imagine it for long enough, and vocally enough, and you won't have to imagine it.
