$25 will get you about R185 (Rand). That's no where near enough for a months food.
If you plan on touring South Africa, you will need about R200 a day (excluding accommodation)
A simple idea of what things cost here - Bread - R6, 2l Coke - R10, steak dinner at a restaurant - R100 etc, Big Mac Meal - R20 etc...
You do the calculations.

The Rand/Dollar exchange rate is currently R7.2578=$1 so $25 is about R181,45.Even a varsity student couldn't fill their fridge with so little money.

Try a minimum of $80 for the month's groceries if you will be on your own. Food is quite expensive in SA. When it comes to accomodation, you can get a good b&b at a reasonable amount, some are less than R200 per day with high quality standards as well.
Enjoy SA!!

It wont go that far... its a misconception that SA is so cheap - if you are in a city (durban, Johannesberg, Cape Town) things can be really expensive. If you shopped at a supermarket (like Pick n Pay ) you could get a fair amount of groceries for $25, but prob not to last you a week (esp if you eat meat). as for presents, you could maybe get an item of clothing for that cost but it wont go far.

Quite far, I'm not sure what the exchance rate is but it is about
$1 = R6.00
Wich means $25.00 x 6 = R150.00. This if you're alone will stock your fridge for a week. But if you use this $25.00 for entermainment you can go to a restaurant and a nice movie!
*** edit***
Raging bull, is that what a Dollar cost these days, hell, when I went overseas it was R5-20 and that was, goodness, come to think of it, three years ago!!! Time flies!!!

You're talking bollocks, man! $25 won't fill your fridge for a month in any country. Unless your fridge is the size of a pencil case.

not very far...
well, I'm speaking from a Sandtonite point of view...
in a week i always spend around R300...not including petrol. depend on your lifestyle i suppose...so in a month, i literally spend R1 200... and of course the rest of my pay goes to all the necessary things in life... medical aid, car payments, rent, pension fund, (tax), unemployment fund, water and electricity, my monthly groceries, my monthly wardrobe, entertainment, savings and investments as well... so no, R150 is basically (for me), pocket money... i could get two cocktails at Della Salute, an order of lasagna and a top at Mr Price...
