when someone refers to u (if ur latino/hispanic) as 'mexican' even though u could be from el salvador, puerto rico, cuba, etc.
or if ur asian being called 'chinese' though u may be from korea, philippines, malaysia, etc.
i myself find it offensive cuz it has happened to me...but it depends on how ignorant the person saying it is...and ive ran into quite a few of people like that in my life. makes me want to kick the crap outta the person instead of correcting them or educating them about it.

The same things occur in Asia. I work In South Korea, where if you are white you are almost always called "miguk-saram," which means American. A couple of years ago when there was a fresh wave of anti-Americanism, several Canadians and Brits I know were yelled at to go home #@%!! Americans. I am a white American but I have often had Koreans say they thought I am Canadian because I "seem too nice" to be an American. Am I offended by the ignorance of others? On a good day, no. I hope, however, through correcting misperceptions I can do my part to dispel ignorance and stereotyping. The hardest part is not to react negatively or return ignorance for ignorance.

Hi, I'm Mexican...if someone asks me if I'm Puerto Rican or Cuban or anything else I don't get upset because how the heck should they know what my ethnicity is? (we don't all look the same). I only get upset if I hear people talking "****" about Mexicans or insulting them.
Heck, I've been asked if I was Indian(from India) or Egyptian or part Japanese all in 1 month time!

Hell, I'm 63/64ths white (the other part Native American) and I am outraged by the ignorance of a lot of people who lump people together in general categories without checking their facts first.
While it's true that I love to play the game of people watching and trying to guess their origins (I love the study of language and human migrations, etc.) I learned the hard way a long time ago - I thought Craig Biggio of the Houston Astros was Scottish just because he resembled Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead (who IS Scottish). And yes, it's possible Biggio does have some Celtic blood (maybe his mom is, or maybe his Italian relatives are from the North of Italy where there is still a remnant red-haired blue/eyed Celtic contribution to the genepool); but even that is still unknown by me and it may have nothing to do with his features at all.
BTW I, with my 1/64th Native American and mostly Scotch-Irish-English heritage, have been variously called a "Mexican" , a "Greek" or a "Korean"! So yes, it's dumb when someone gets it wrong. All they'd have to do is ask me and I'd gladly tell them the stuff in my family's heritage. But if you choose not to talk about it, that is your privilege and you owe nothing to anyone.

They say ignorance is bliss. But if you go around feeling cranky and wanting to kick some *** just because of this... its only a waste of energy.
On first encounters, it is very difficult to tell where people come from, unless you actually ask them. Its not like everyone has psychic abilities, y'know.
This site might prove that even an asian could be mistaken from telling where another asian comes from.

Try doing facial features test.

the proper way is to correct them, most people without looking at the passport would find it very difficult to judge a persons ethnicity just by looking at the face or the color of the skin... funny, but outside europe and america, if you see a white caucasian, people immediately assume youre american...my father is spanish and my mother is chinese, and people i meet ( even in my own country sometimes ) have no idea what i am...so i gently correct them, most people dont mean to insult you...

Yeah I hate it. I'm Japanese so being called Chinese appears to be a good safe bet. Even though statistically they would have a 1 in 5 chance of being correct.
I really cringe when people use the term Mexican. I don't think Guatemalans, Hondurans, and Salvadorians like being called Mexican.
