Need Robotics Projects Help!!!!!!!!?

Question

I need help on a project in my class and i need to make this thing that can pick a pencil up from inside a water jug and the width of the thing can be 2 inches at the most. Do you got any ideas for me.

I'm in a robotics team as well and what i would do is send a loop down and when the pencil get in the loop... Tighten it so that the loop grabs the pencil!!!

Put something sticky on the end to grab the pencil.
