Someone needs help!
"What chances WOULD the Confederacy HAVE if Sherman failed to conquer Atlanta, and if McClellan were elected in 1864?"
Even without taking Atlanta, Sherman and the force of nearly 100,000 soldiers could have gone on deeper into the heart of the Rebellion. Even if McClellan were elected, peace may not have come immediately. By this stage, neither France nor Britain would have recognized Southern independence.

McClellan, General - Union Army It is very likely that Lincoln would have been defeated, he thought he was about to lose. McClellan had become a peacenik and probably would have settled for an armistice and a peace treaty. Two nations would have emerged. I have long felt that the new nations would reunite in the future, they needed each other. Besides there were very strong ties between the North and the South that would have been reasserted.

You are right - they would have made peace.
The North could lose by not winning; the South could win by not losing.
