Use one of your hands to hold the monitor VGA cable (the one with several pins at the end). Match the holes in a socket at the back of your laptop or at the side may be. And plug it in.

Then boot your system and turn on the external monitor.

Usually the laptops have a special keyboard keys combination that you can press to switch between the external monitor and the builtin TFT.

Most of the laptops today have a VGA output port. VGA port has 3 rows of 5 pins in a specific order.

If you dont have such a port in your laptop, you are out of luck. You cant connect the vga monitor.

Another option you could have is connect your laptop with a TV if you have a TV out port. S-Video could be a type of port you could have in your laptop (many pcs have it today)

Usually most modern laptops will have a port on them for an external monitor. In most cases it'll look just like the monitor port that you'd find on a regular desktop PC. Apple laptops have a different type of port, but usually have an adapter cable to plug a regular monitor in. You'll plug the monitor into this port, and the laptop should be able to switch to this, or act as an extra display depending on how you configure your system.

You'll need either a monitor cable (if you have the blue kind of outlet) or DVI cable (for the white outlet)
