5 or six drops a gallon is OK, you should be aiming to neutralise the chlorine, don't worry about heavy metals, there is not a significant amount in town water (otherwise it would not be suitable for drinking). Can I suggest that you do not do a complete water change, you should only ever replace one quater of the volume at a time. This reduces the pH and temperature chance stress on the fish and any introduced chemicals are diluted in the remaining water.

You should follow instructions some are more concentrated than others, i use 10ml per 21gallons but i bought a different brand and had to use 20ml per 21gallons. You should also buy a small measuring cup (which should come with the conditioner).

If you have chlorine, use the chlorine levels. If you have chloromine, use the chloramine levels. If you don't know what your water supplier uses, call and ask.
