She was a typical poor rich girl. An Austrian princess who became the queen of France.
Due to her position as the queen, she was totally sheltered from the harshness of life of her subjects outside the walls of the palace.
So when she asked why the mob was angry and was answered 'Because they do not have bread to eat mi Lady!', her famous answer 'Let them eat cake' was with no malice.
She really was oblivious to what was going on.

Vincent Cronin wrote a good non-biased book about Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. If u get a chance - please read it. Also look up the French Revolution - detailed socio-economic state of France and other causes that contributed to hatred of the monarchy.
Louis XVI has often been compared to Nicholas II of Russia - a ruler who was completely unfit for government and totally nieve about the true state that his country was in when he inherited power.
For Louis XVI - the wars of his grand father Louis XV and his great great grandfather Louis XIV - completely destroyed France financially. As the New King - Louis XVI and Marie Anthoinette inherited an impoverished France. Louis and Marie Anthoinette bore the full brunt of an angry nation for the wars and overspending and corruption of previous French kings.
If history is written by victors, then the history of the French revolution and the fate of Louis and Marie Anthoinette, has been much maligned.

Maria Antonia Josefa Johanna von Habsburg-Lothringen (November 2, 1755 – October 16, 1793), known to history as Marie Antoinette (pronounced /mariË Ént̪wanÉt̪/), was born an Archduchess of Austria, and later became Queen of France and Navarre. She was the daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor Francis I and Maria Theresa of Austria. She was married to Louis XVI of France at age 15, and was the mother of "the lost dauphin" Louis XVII. Marie Antoinette is perhaps best remembered for her legendary (and, some modern historians say, exaggerated) excesses, and for her death: she was executed by guillotine at the height of the French Revolution in 1793, for the crime of treason.

i dont know what a flip is, but marie antoinette was a queen. she became queen of france at 19.. i think. well i guess she could be considered a hero to some because she did whatever whe wanted but to others she could be considered oblivious and selfish. she is legendary for her excessive spending and her death at the guillotine by the french revolutionists. she went on spending money on expensive things while her country was bankrupt and her people didn't have food. i think though, it must have been hard for her being only nineteen and being forced to become queen of an entire country.

Well, she was from Austria when she was berothed to Luis, the son of the king of France. When they got married, the king died, leaving the throne to Louis. So, she became queen. The people hated her because she was spending so much money on clothes, hair, house, gambling, and a lot others. So, they decided to execute her. I would consider her kinda in the middle, because, she WAS queen of France, but then, everyone hated her. I hoped that helped! For extra, go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marie_Antoinette
