What is the best diet for goldfish, and for bettas? Are pellets better than the flakes? I have Orandas in particular. Also, I think it's good to add certain fruits or vegetables to their diet for their health? I have seen oranges in the pet store also -- and do they eat anything else like those worms, etc? I know those dried worms sold in stores often kill bettas, it happened to my sister once before I read about it, but I don't know if this flaky stuff is good enough to really make them live as long as goldfish do, and the full three or so years bettas do? I have had bettas live about three years primarily on the pellets in the past, and with some of the worm treats thrown in. thanks!

Wow, so many great questions, that it is hard for me to pick a favorite answer, though the ones with specific foods and brands stand out.
And no -- my goldfish are in a 30 gallon tank, and my betta is now in a one gallon, but I plan to put him in my newly empty 10 gallon, possibly with other fish. Thanks!!

goldfish - good quality pellets, preferably ones made specificially for goldfish, cooked deshelled peas, lettace, cabbage, zucchini, cucumber, spinach. they'll eat frozen and live brine shrimp, daphnia etc too. remember to feed them sparingly, they get constipated really easily, thats what the peas are for, fishy laxative!

for Bettas go with with betta-specialised pellets, they're more carnivorous than goldfish, i feed my bettas Attison Betta Pro pellets, if you can get hold of that (need to buy it online really) it's great! i've never had a betta turn it down, even when the fish is brand new and only been in the tank an hour. mine get 1-2 pellets in the morning and 2 in the evening, with 1 starve day a week combined with the pea, and frozen/jellied/live food as treats.

the freeze-dried stuff is just a treat food and doesn't offer much in the way of nutrition as other foods.

with all fresh veges it's best to blanch them first, or at least wash them, make sure theres no nasties on them, and in the case of cucumber especially, soften it up so it's easier to munch! all fresh vege should not be left in the tank if uneaten, it will go manky really quickly and mess up the water.

your goldfish and bettas aren't in the same tank are they?? because they shouldn't ever be kept together.

My goldfish and bettas get a variety of flakes, pellets, fresh fruits and veggies and frozen foods. I use Omega fish foods because there is not ground corn or filler ingredients. There's nothing wrong with keeping them together, so long as the filtration doesn't bother the betta too much. They can live in the same warm temperatures.
