You can have them take on-line IQ tests that would give you a general idea. But any IQ test takes time, and most 8 and 11 year old would much rather to do something other than have their mental intellect assessed. So even if you make them take, it doesn't mean they'll give it their strongest effort and thus their scores could most deffinatley be off. Also keep in mind that an IQ develops differently from person to person. A kid might have a relatively high IQ score now, yet it might not increase as they grow older. Also a kid who doesn't have that high of an IQ now may develop later on.

Take myself for an example. When I was 12 a psychologist concluded that my learning abilities were three years behind of what they should be. There was eviendence to support this theory , plus I wasn't the most academicaly efficent kid. But now that I'm 16, 4 years later, and an honors/AP student, so naturally my academic demands are much more challening than the average student. Keep in mind that some of us, children, are late bloomers.

One way to get a good idea of what your children's IQ scores is listening to their verbal skills. If they speak well, then chances are they are smarter kids. If they have a strong reading comprehension they probably have good IQs.

Keep in mind that if you're sitting at home and don't have the knowledge to figure out how bright your children are, you may not be the best person to assess them. Someone who has a background in the field, which doesn't always mean they have a good understanding, but at least they have an education in the field to back their "conclusions".

Katlyn is correct for the most part. I've taken various forms of IQ tests, including online tests, and they usually fall within a ten point range for me, so I won't say that the online tests are terribly inaccurate. Still, a REAL IQ test needs to be proctored by a professional for it to be considered technically accurate. There are various IQ tests availible online, but especially since these are online tests not necessarily put together by professionals, the y may be flawed and not appropriate for younger age groups. Run a search and try a few yourself and then give you children a shot at the ones you found acceptable. I'm personally fond of nice clean examples like Tickle.com.

Schools test each year looking for gifted students. If they are in public schools and your kids teacher thinks they are gifted then you would have been notified and they would be tested with your permission. Also with your permission they would have placed them into the gifted studies program set up for your state. The on line IQ test are worthless to test for a gifted child and will not be recognized by your state. You can call your school and they can refer you to someone to test or retest you kids. The school only test once but the parent can have the child tested as many time as you are willing to pay for. It can take many tries to pass the test.

IQ testing is more involved than you think.

Whether or not IQ testing is accurate is highly debatable, and the results would need to be examined by an expert to be properly put into context.

Testing young children is especially inaccurate since the standard deviation is substantially higher at younger ages.

If you really want to know though, their school counselor could probably arrange for them to be tested.

BTW: Online tests are HIGHLY inaccurate. I don't recommend them.

If you have the internet, you can google IQ test and come up with free IQ tests to take right then and there. If you don't have the internet in your home, try the library.

I hope you don't test them. I don't mean to be one of those "don't do it, don't do it" people, cause that doesn't answer your question. However, I know for a fact that if they find out that they aren't gifted, that will hurt, and if on is and one isn't, are you certain you won't treat them differently based on that knowledge?
