the beckham's wanted to enlarge their market share by capturing the lucrative and highly untapped american soccer market. it's not only his football career that will benefit but as well as his wife's (victoria) budding showbiz career.
beckham is still a marketing fave, therefore he will still sell merchandise and will do numerous endorsements. so think about all the spin offs.
lastly, he has a football academy in LA. it makes sense for him to end his professional football career with galaxy and to continue promoting football in america thru his academy.

Because Capello kept him on the bench for a long time. With his contract about to expire, Beckham considered the different offers he got, including a renewed 2-year contract with Real Madrid and decided to go to LA Galaxy.

This Yankee would rather he didn't. Despite my opinions of Mr. Beckham, I fail to understand how MLS can justify his type of salary.
It's too much for one player at this point of the development of MLS. If they had stronger ownership and the game drew like say in England, that would be understandable.
I think MLS took their first step down the same road that NASL did.

He said it himslef once that he wanted to help US Soccer and to tell you the truth he'll bring in fans but not be the savior to the USA, I figured it's nearing a time of change and Beckham wants to be like the greats that once played in the US right before they retired, think about it!!

because he is a s.h.i.t footballer now and for the $$$$$$$$$$$$$ he is not good in european league only s.h.i.t leagues lyk the MLS
