Was the engine just cleaned or degreased ?, likely they got water in it and opened it to dry it out--then forgot to lock it down. as long as the cap is close to where it should be it still should start-- the spark has no problem jumping 3/8 of an inch.

Odds are someone either forgot to bolt it down again or lost the fasteners. Often times the fasteners are unique to the distributor in question (in other words, a dealer-only part). If the fasteners are expensive, odds are the former owner didn't see the point to replacing them.
You didn't mention the age or make of the truck, but there's another option: someone has recently re-timed the car, or left the cap loose so they could adjust the timing.
The car should still run, though it will probably run poorly or not at all at speed. Be careful! The possibility of an unpleasant electric shock becomes much higher since charge from the rotor could arc to the engine or the nearest person.

My God they are everywhere.............. the odds are idiots, the it should run ok but not at all speeds, be careful you dont get shocked, .......good grief, surely the dumbass has enough sense to turn the damned engine off before he screwed the friggin cap down, surely he has enough sense to just put the cap back and stop worryin about drivel..... but then again.....................
