A normal grown up human body needs a sleep of 8 hours to maintain proper body metabolism and balance. Well if someon is in the natural sedentary life style then this is a must. APrt frm this various phsical conditions like Pregnancy in women increase the need for rest , so they need to sleep more .
Aprt frm this , seasonal variation like feeling sleepy in summers in aftrenoon's naps is a body's natural method of resting while the outside temprature is at its peak.
Age and your activity also effect how much you should sleep and how much you can get to sleep , Like New year we dont sleep the whole night ? ;-) ....... Kids need to sleep more as they are growing fast in there tender year till about 3 years of agre , after 5 years , Kids are active and even sleep less the required , so all in all if u are in your regualar lifestyle and a young adult sleep mnimum 8 hours a day .....
Also if u sleep , then the spleep which is really usefull is the Deep Sleep that which relaxes your body. Just lying in the bed and not going to sleep easily does'nt count on that .
Ancient Indian Wisdom says sleep for a healthy humna bieng is around 6 hours to maintain proepr body metabolism . But in preent times and thigs like noise pollution and stiff we rarely are able to get that .
If one faals asleep deeply within 30 mins of lying down then its perfect healthy destresses way of sleeping quality that one may have.

i sleep as much hours as possible, jus got up from a 12 hr. sleep.
Normally on work days i sleep for 10 hrs or 9 if i have to get up early.

Not much I work the night shift and have 2 kiddies at home so my sleep is limited however, I took nyquil this morning and actually slept from 930a to 4p that is the longest I have slept straight through in the longest time. It was wonderful!
