For every fight, there's different reasons. Some of which include: Anger at one player, entertainment for fans, frustration (if your team is getting dominated), sticking up for a teammate, ect. But the result of a fight can be very important, if a player wins, it may affect his team's morale, making them play better. Most fights don't affect the team, but some fights do have a significant effect on the outcome of the game.

As a hockey player, I can tell you with 100% the reason. Frustration. This is one of the most frustrating sports you could EVER play. Aside from the fact that you hate (for the most part) the people your up against, if your losing, it makes it 50 times more painful. And most the time people on the other team will be talking to you the whole game. Ever notice its the losing team that starts the fight mostly? They don't do it cause they want to make good tv, these guys arn't that shallow like some football, and NBA players are. These guys fight because they feel like there is nothing else they can do.

No its not just for entertainment...although it is entertaining
A fight could happen for a few reasons (cheap shot, frustration to name two) but it actually is kind of unique to the sport in that BEFORE they decided to screw around with the rules, it was a way which the players were more in charge of the game. What i mean is before the "new" nhl was made, referees didn't blow the whisle every five seconds when someone was hit or checked "the wrong way"...if a guy on the other team hit a guy on your team in a way that was an obvious attempt to hurt or rough them up more so than normal, you could go over to that idiot and exchange words to basically say cut it out OR ELSE...and of course if they didn't listen you would give them the or else and start a fight to make sure they didn't do it again...I'm not sure if that makes sense but trust me its not purely for entertainment. A lot of stuff is seen/said on the ice that fans never really see/hear so it just seems like fighting is purely entertainment.

HAHA no that is what people who don't know or understand hockey think though. Not talking about you but talking about the Highlight reel garbage. The players fight for quite a few reasons. What most don't see is they usually go after another fighter. It is to fire up your own team. It is to get the fans back in it when you get a "stale" atmosphere. It can be to kill momentum(almost like a time out) same as to get momentum. Sometimes it is about a dirty play and making up for it. Sometimes it is by a player trying to get the other one out. Some tough guys are also good players or playmakers and so the opponent tries to get them in a fight to take them out of the game.

In a game of contact, speed, and more contact; things happen that don't get caught by the ref's. Honor, respect, and protection of the TEAM must take priority.Especially this time of year when you have players taking runs at your best players to try to take them out of the play offs. You have to come to their aid at all costs.Taking on a man Mano e Mano is always the best way to settle it. It happens in baseball(throwing at a hitter) Basketball, and even sometimes in football(the NO FUN LEAGUE) fines people for the stupidest things that it has taken that out of the game because of monetary reasons.I'm glad to see it still exists in the NHL. and hope it remains forever!

fighting is important to hockey, when the other team has a goal to hurt your best player and they would rather see that person hurt than win the game (see pens games for good examples of people trying to hurt sid nonstop) you have to draw a line and just drop em' sometimes to prove you are not going to lay down and let them kill you. that's always good to see teamates stick up for each other. in the sabres ottowa fight ottowa stood by and watched their goalie fight a forward from the sabres. in my opinion thats pretty sad cuz there they stood watching while the poor guy got beat down. think that the devils would watch that happen to brody? i think not

There are a lot of different reasons, but more often then not it happens after someone takes a cheap shot at somebody. When the refs won't enforce, the big boys will.

fighting is as big as a goal for motivation and it makes everyone respect each other . point is not as many dirty hits against players that are better at scoring or have more teeth. and makes everyone wake up.

Having just watched an Ottawa-Buffalo game with lots of fighting, what I noticed is that it really heats up the crowd. It's officially disapproved of, but not really stopped, so I think it's part of the "entertainment" in the game and brings in the crowds and the TV audiences, thus adding to the money that flows in. So what about having gladiatorial fights to the death in arenas with lions and other wild animals?
(Baseball's better — they just say rude things to the umpire.)
